Pith Gallery is pleased to present the Pith Biennale of Conschmemporary Art 2010. This exhibition promises some of Canada’s finest and freshest talent ranging from a variety of visual arts disciplines. This exhibition differs from others of its kind (ie: other Biennials taking place in Alberta at approximately the same time) in two key ways: To begin with, rather than a Biennial, Pith offers more refined experience through its use of the word Biennale. When we say biennale we are transformed into verbal elegance, feeling somehow more deeply rooted in a sense of fine culture and tradition. Try it. First, say biennial. Ugh, you see? Pedestrian, cloddish and nasal, no? Now say biennale. Wow, hey? Grace. Class. A cultured mystique that will impress your friends. That’s Pith for you. All of those things, except for most of them, define the gallery space to perfection. Secondly, our biennale will be showcasing an entirely new brand of visual art: Conschmemporary art. Conschmemporary art differs vastly from contemporary art in that, rather than using a “t” after the “con”, it utilizes the insertion of “schm” to produce a different pronunciation altogether. Canada Council for the Arts defines contemporary art as “artistic work from the present era that uses the current practices and styles of its discipline”. By adding “schm” to the term, Pith Gallery introduces a fresh sensibility into contemporary art, specifically the sensibility of “schmeh”. Not meant to lazily dismiss the exhibition or the work within it, the inclusion is intended to respond to the ever-present question: “what is contemporary art now?” to which our best answer is a confidant and fully informed, “schmeh”. The Pith Biennale of Conschmemporary Art opens Saturday, May 29, 2010 at 7pm. Please come and celebrate the art, compliment our use of the word biennale, and see for yourselves the very first (ever) ground-breaking exhibition of conschmemporary art.
