This is My Cecil

Tomas Jonsson

EPCOR CENTRE’s Ledge Gallery presents This is My Cecil by Tomas Jonsson May 11 – 28, 2010 Artist in attendance: 5 – 8 pm, Monday – Friday Closing Reception: Friday, May 28, 2010 Through a regularly scheduled series of workshops, Jonsson will work with participants to reorient the narratives that surround, engage or otherwise define the Cecil Hotel. Recent narratives around the Cecil have predominantly been negative, focusing on it as a site of criminal activity, of contagent poverty, a blackhole of property value and roadblock to urban growth and development. Are there other dialogues that could be initiated around this space? Recognizing that change will have to happen, are there other futures for the Cecil, besides the proverbial parking lot? This is My Cecil uses iconic elements from the building’s past, both as bar, and former site of Western Canada’s first German language newspaper (Der Deutches Canadianer) to create a space for discussion and narrative (re)creation. http://www.epcorcentre.org/images/visual%20arts%20-%20pdf/CECIL_ledge.pdf http://www.onsitereview.ca/thisismycecil
